      There has been a thread before regarding unpainted, bare aluminium mess kits. I used to have one that was never painted. It was a complete M31 messkit I got straight from a former forced labourer. He got this one issued while working forced labour in a German factory. I think these unpainted ones, and more so the ones without handles, were used by labourers (forced or not) and civilians. At the end of the war also many people made use of public kitchens for a meal. Then these kits are a usefull item.
