    Bf109 Vertical Stabilizer-Hakenkreuz panel

Here are pictures of something I’m very proud to have acquired. Not only is it a relatively rare, and interesting piece, it also has a certain amount of history behind it. Scratched into the back is the name, city and date that it was “liberated”.

“Cut from a Stuka dive bomber we downed near Trapani, Sicily”.
    July, 10th 1943
    Capt. G.F. Kauffman
    30th Inf. Reg 0-357333

Captain Gael and his driver had spotted the plane shot down in a field on the western edge of the island while participating in Operation Husky. He and his driver used an ax to chisel the panel out.

Interestingly enough however, the panel is actually from a Messerschmitt – Bf109. I believe that JG 53 and JG 77 were the units stationed in Sicily during this time. I read somewhere that there were 100 axis fighters downed between July 10th, and July 14th. Time to dig into the books….

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

    Peter

Fantastic! It's just the kind of piece that I've been looking for ever since I can remember but never found. Very, very nice.

All-as sometimes happens…hard choices had to be made. I sold this a few years ago and am wondering if anyone knows where it resides? It would be nice to get this one back but am open to others.
I am in a position now to re-acquire and have been looking pretty hard. Thanks to those I’ve already asked. Any help locating an aluminum 109 tail section appreciated.

You should talk to the person you sold it to.
