there are E cans and P cans

"P" is for petrol, they had both oil cans and kerosene or something like it for cleaning. two of these small cans fit in one P can

"E" is for extras (of course really the german word for that) tools, spare booster, booster soaking can, trigger group, etc. I don't have the full contents list in front of me and I'm sure it changed

              Hi Greg,
in this case I'm pretty sure that "E" stands for "Ersatzteile",i.e. Spare Parts!
              Cheers

Wow guys! Thanks for all the response and the great pictures of all the ammo cans. The one I have most closely resembles the one at the top of Willie's photo in both style and color. It has a waffenamt stamp on the top under the handle along with the initials HK. The waffenamt stamp is a Third Reich one rather than the Weimar looking one on Ostvolk's ammo box. I'll try to get some pics and post them in the next few days.

Are these "E" and "P" boxes rare or just as much seen as the normal Patronenkasten 41?
