        Hi Sean
I would like to believe it was that simple but I haven't found the proof it's so yet but it could likely be so. I think we need a little more proof for that. But if someone have a idea or severel how to interpret and / or read the construction of the ciphers I'll be glad to read. My own idea or meaning is for the moment we have an individual number given to a Maker or contracter who use it shortly or long time for a serial of all kinds of equipment whatever he makes.

I believe Willi Zahn had a theory

on RB Nr's startingwith numbers other than zero. It's somewhere on this forum, not too long ago. I've got a pair of 44 date trousers RB Nr'ed with a paper tag sewn to them indicating manufacturer name and city. Also has B44 stamped on them not too far from the RB Nr. Had a belt with a three letter code and an RB Nr, once. A lot of my RB Nr's aren't legible.

Actually some companies listed their RB number in the phone book of all places. I'm digging thru my Berlin Phone book to see if I can post an example. So far I've only managed to get eye strain.Jim

                  Hi Jack,

It was a friend of mine who actually showed me an example in one of the phone books he had.He sold his books off and I thought I got them all. Now I think he may have either kept the one with the RBNs or sold it to another friend in Tucson. In any case I can't find an example. I did E Mail the other collector in Tucson for his help. The person who showed me the RBNs just moved to DC and i'm unable to talk with him at the moment. But I will pursue it and hopefully back up my statement.Regards Jim

                    Ok, here are some more:

                    Breadbag - 1/0344/0144 (Illegible Maker's Mark)
                    Belt - 0/0196/0330
                    MP40 Pouches - 0/0378/0007
                    Belt - 0/1165/0014

The RBnr. can also be found on clothing articles. For example:

                    HBT M43 Feldbluse - 0/0917/0308
                    HJ Flak Helper's Cap - 0/2009/0004

An odd version found on a Bergmutze - 0/045/731

                    Finally, a Betr. number found in a M43 cap - 0/1200/0750

In reference to an earlier question, yes late FJ helmet liners had RBNrs that relate to the earlier company names rpinted on them

This is a tough issue and very interesting. What you really need is RBNrs and maker marks on the same item, such as the Breslau 0921 item. I have only been studying this as it relates to FJ items, and there have been some consistant patterns emerging. Items made by Berlin companies always had a "0250" as the first set. Other big cities ended in a "50"...."0350", "0450", "0850", etc. Small places like Litzmanstadt in Poland (who made FJ smocks and Luft tropical items) had a "1349". The first two numbers ( "13", "02", "09" etc) could be the region (Wehrkreis), with the last two numbers being the city, going by the largest to the smallest. With "50" being the main city in that area. A "21" or "49" being a smaller city. I am sure there is some logic to all of this. I have a friend that has been studying this for a long time, as it relates to FJ items. We kinda know who made the items, as they were limited in scope. FJ helmet liners being made in Berlin and always having a "0250" is where this started for me. Then I saw early smocks with Berlin makers............later smocks of the same construction had "0250"'s.

Here are a few RB Nr from me:

0/0673/0086 - inside the liner of a greenish LW Tropenhelm

Numbers from a no-decal M-42 helmet, maker NS:
01/01130 - marked on the chinstrap. The numbers are well seen, there are no other, but maybe it is mis-marked, because shouldn't the number be twice longer?
0/0250/0217 - on the back side of the leather of the liner
RB Nr 0/0251/0111 - this number is written on the metal liner ring, the numbers make a circle around the 1943 year /the way usually the manufacturer company name is written/.

0/0250/0912 - on the back side of the leather of a M-42 single decal Heer M-42 helmet. The Line ring is marked year 1943 and manufacturer name around /can not read it, the liner is too thight to the shell/.

                            That's from me for now
