    Mess Kit Poll

    Hi,
    I found this on germanmilitaria.com :

    http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Heer/photos/H004656.html

so, I thought over and remeber that I have a " CFL 44 " mess kit, made of aluminium !
I wanted to know, are there other producers of `44 alu mess kits ? And when did they start making steel mess kits !?
And what about the Colour, when did they change that, from Fieldgrey to Oliv ?
So I start a Poll in a german forum ( www.militaria-fundforum.de ). And I want to start this also here.

    Hi,
IMO, mess-kits were made of aluminium from their introduction to the end of the war, with also a production of messkits made of steel in 1942/43 (more or less due to makers inerty).

    my messkits :

WBL 28 aluminium Feldgrau (M1910 messkit)
RZM M6/25/38 aluminium Feldgrau (M1910 messkit)
    SMM 34 aluminium dark Feldgrau
    VDNS 37 aluminium dark Feldgrau
    FWBN 38 aluminium dark Feldgrau
    VDNS 39 aluminum dark Feldgrau
    GNL 39 aluminium dark Feldgrau
    MN 39 aluminium dark Feldgrau
    AWF 39 aluminium dark Feldgrau
CFL 40 aluminium factory dark Feldgrau + field light Feldgrau
    RFI 40 aluminium dark Feldgrau
    VAL 40 aluminium dark Feldgrau
HRE 40 aluminium factory dark Feldgrau + field three tone camo
    L&SL 41 aluminium light Feldgrau
    HRE 41 aluminium light Feldgrau
    HRE 42 aluminium light Feldgrau
    OHW 43 steel light Feldgrau
    AEMA 43 steel light Feldgrau
    Black Enameled steel, no markings
    Green Enameled steel, no markings
DMN 44 aluminium Feldgrau with inner plate
    FWBN 44 aluminium Light Feldgrau
MN 44 aluminium light Feldgrau with inner plate
0/0571/0116 44 aluminium light Feldgrau with inner plate
    CFL 44 aluminium dark Feldgrau
MN 45 aluminium olive green with inner plate

Thanks, I will add it to the above List soon !
      It`s interesting, all steel mk`s were produced `42 and `43 !
Anyone with a`44 or `45 steel mess kit ?

I have many mess kits also but you'll find that aluminum was used till the end of the war. My HRE45 is made by "Ritter" aluminum and came back in the origional paper wrapper as it was found at the depot yard. Accually, most Ritter aluminum mess kits you will find out in the collecting community with 44 & 45 dates are mint & unissued.

I have and had few 1944 alum messkits. They are / they were marked :
            OHW 44 , MN 44, FWBN 44 and one unmarked ( but all characteristics were from 44 ) .
Steel messkits were made from late 1942 to the end of war . As I know alu messkits from late war (1944/45 ) are rare.
My friend have steel meskkits marked WJ 44 and one unmarked . All steel meskits I've seen were in diffrent colors ( one of my friend have very dark green - almost black messkit , other friend have brown and very dark blue messkit ). All steel meskkits I had or I have , have been made between 1942/1943 and were olive outside and red inside ( this kind of painting was used to early 1944 - my friend have steel canteen cup painted in the same style like steel messkits and cups from 1942/1943) .
One of my friend have steel messkit all painted in olive ( oustside and inside ).
I aslo now that AEM.A made messkits painted outside in olive and inside in dark blue ( the same sitution was with steel canteens made by AEM.A ).
As I know olive color was introduced in 1940 or 1941 ( my friend had top of alum messkit from 1940 which was in olive .But I've seen feldgrau alum messkits from 1941 ( it was marked CJJ 41 ).
            I've got in my collection messkits marked VDNS 41 ( pinted in olive ) , L.S&L 40 ( painted in feldgrau ) , OHW 43 ( painted olive outside and red inside ), ESB 42 ( painted in olive ) , OHW 44 ( painted in rotten olive ).

I just picked up a steel one marked ET 43. THe bottom portion is not marked, but the olive paint matches and both pieces are painted red inside. Unfortunately someone repainted it with green paint. I was able to remove just about all of it without damaging the original paint.

I got a few early and mid war alu ones and one steel enameld without markings.

Also an alu dated '45 like someone discriped above:
                            MN 45 , Alu ( ohne Me******223;striche, ohne Griff am Deckel )

Its in good, but used condition.
I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.
