    we can suspect that it was done for better visual effect of what was on the tab (Lictor's fasces).

      Red tabs were made in a very unusual italian fabric, the same used for the red shoulder straps; once you handle them you clearly see the difference between the italian red fabric and the german black wool or moleskin used for SS tabs.
      All the original Italian SS collar tabs are made with that fabric.
      The one posted by Vince looks made of wool.
