These eagles are always tough when they are this well rendered. Personally, this eagle looks like it has a decent chance of being good. The swastika is fairly small and the leg/footwork off from others, but with these the template was often enhanced or ignored in places.

Assuming there's a template under there, it looks like a decent bird to me.

Know what you are looking at and you can buy from anywhere IF you are willing to cross certain dealer's palms with silver. I remember Doc Strangelove buying a 'Sachsen' cufftitle from Sneider's Treasures for a fraction of the real price because no-one knew it was real ... including The Great Expert himself Charlie Sneider. lol

Yes, but Steve has it in hand and the embroidery is tight on this one so it's not possible to tell by looking at it. It will take him a few seconds to check.

I have picked up excellent pieces from dealers that have junk - even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Completely concur that a good base of knowledge and resources are helpful when taking a chance.

Steve, either way good luck on completing your project. Take your time and get the right stuff to finish it up.

David, the forum members are very forgiving if a favored dealer sells a bad piece - it happens all the time and members fall over themselves providing context as to why the bad piece crept into inventory and was sold.

I'm talking about "reputable" dealers. However, I would add that some of the big name dealers considered reputable from 1970 to present have since been downgraded to trash dealers to be avoided at all costs.

Wittmann had a decent reputation 20 years ago. Many sites and smaller dealers are routinely mocked as junk peddlers, as are the collector dupes who buy from them. It shouldn't be that way - buy the item, not the story or who sells it.

Any dealer can make a mistake and take an item back for a refund or exchange credit, it's what happens when the item returns that really matters. Does he sell it as a fake or 'questionable' item or simply toss it back on the website to trap the next unsuspecting buyer ?


Apparently Mr Wittmann has a terrible reputation amongst the dagger collectors, and that's the field he specialises in.

How the dealer developed his reputation is interesting, but it still comes down to the item, not the story or who sells it.

Wittman has a very good reputation in daggers before he even began producing books on the subject. It's a simple fact. That reputation as apparently suffered - but today's platinum dealer is only a few forum rants away from slipping into the same boat.

I only wanted to make a counterpoint to the statement that Steve was somewhat gullible or should have known better on the purchase of these tabs. It's an unnecessary comment that serves no purpose but to put salt in the wound.

Of course you can't see it from photos.........Perfect example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. Yeah, that's a bad eagle, because I can't see anything with my Xray vision.

Don't buy SS cloth. Don't buy SS at all. To much risk and the majority of us have only limited knowledge. Clearly after looking at post after post collecting SS anything is a minefield. Reproductions getting to such a quality that even the hands on guy's argue. Buy if great provenance. if not do not. just an opinion.
