Sonderkommando collar tab in Dachau insignia lot

    Hello all,

I recently saw this Dachau insignia lot and it had a Sonderkommando collar tab in it.

I know I have seen this cipher on a shoulder board (I believe it was from Jim Toncar's collection) though I have never seen it on a tab. It certainly looks like it has been there long time. Anyone else familiar with this SK insignia?

looks like it was mounted onto a nice machine produced bevo type tab with a late war style buckram backing.

What was this tab for anyways? These weren't for the KZ inmates were they?

      Tab

      Hello William,
I don't think the tab is SS related, certainly not for the KZ inmates or members of the Sonderkommando as they wore no collar insignia. I think the tab may be related to war time organizations such as the Speer outfit. It may also be related to the NSKK.

The other SS insignia you mentioned may be from Standort Dachau as Standort refers to garrison.

Fair enough, I just saw this in the book and thought it looked similar.

maybe the vet just found a tab and stuck it to one, who knows? It does look like it's been on there a VERY long time.

It's not the only mistake on that page. The "K' wasn't discontinued in 1937. The skull with a "K" underneath had been introduced by then, but only for officers. The "K" continued to be worn by NCOs and men on the staff of the commandant.

Tough to find bevo rank side tab too.
But I think as mentioned before veteran done cypher + tab marriage.

                      Awesome grouping though!

It is a nice grouping, and I wouldn't touch the cyphers. Leave them on the tab - it wouldn't be the first time something seemed wrong but was period.

I got outbid quickly on this lot - I'm glad to see it ended up in your hands and again, congratulations.

                          Thank you, Sir.

I am keeping these for myself. The vertical TK is a screamer as well!
