    Have prices gone insane!!!

For sale on the "Collectors guild" for $21,000! On what planet is this item even close to that price? http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Waffe...s/S006878.html and an Allgemeine mantel for sale for nearly $10000 which may or may not have insignia removed from it, ****e they don't even know if the armband is original to the piece!!
http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Waffe...s/S026078.html I hope there's a few SS rings tucked away in the pockets... Otherwise, the lunatics have left the asylum.

The Collector Guid hasal ways been expensive. Their shipping to Europe is also killer.

Their items are on consignment so Peter doesn't dictate the price the consignee does. Shipping from the States seems to be a killer for most dealers these days ... If I remember correctly CG Auctions wanted $40 for a single medal or bar

Do not speak too soon Ian,

postage from the UK has been creeping up steadily and is about to get a whole lot worse.

As far as US $21,000 for an SS tunic. A price is nothing more than an invitation to treat, an offer to all the world. It will be interesting to see how long that tunic sits there.

How many double decal SS helmets are there for sale at US $25,000 and even higher prices at the moment ???

What is even more surprising is that some are selling at these prices. Good stuff sells fast. Is the doom and gloom of 2008 over ? Prices appear to be holding and in some cases on the move up.

Looks like when it comes to collecting Militaria the sky has not fallen as some predicted and the storm clouds are clearing,

            Chris

Just checked out the SS uniform section and the SS headgear section of the Collectors Guild. Looks like 90% of the items are the same ones that have been sitting there for years.

Coat is overpriced but not so much.
In USA price are very high quite always, so I am not surprised.
If they sell there is a market.
Someone buy from sites, someone from collectors, someone both... If you have friends and sources you will never consider certain prices.
Secondary there are a lot of collectors very reach so... Prices are high.

Knowledge could help more than money.

Yes, I agree. Many collectors seem to have so much money it must be like going to the supermarket rather than the 'thrill of the chase' and the time studying that the rest of us have invested.

Prices have corrected substantially, I have followed several high-end categories that have no doubt dropped 20 - 30% over the past few years and often linger without a sale when too many items hit the market simultaneously.

However, like everything - there are exceptions.

One trend however that disturbs me, is that WW1/ WW2 is losing its historical value with the younger generations, and without the historical value perception these prices are not sustainable. Hence, I do not collect for investment purposes.

There is a famous scene in Gone With The Wind
Where the small black maid says:
                      "Askin' ain't gettin'".

Price is high for sure. Some things to consider with this set would knowing the owners ID up front so that a history of service and units could be established.

The tunic appears to be a carefully modified pre war “VT” M37 officers open collar type, which makes this very interesting to me. It looks like this set has seen a lot of wear and if all insignia is period attached, a pre war field worn named w-SS uniform is far from an easy item to locate. As they say “find another one”!

                          I agree.

For sure quality and high end pieces will always find a buyer although I have seen prices coming down across a range of items over the past 6 months.

As others have already stated, the items on Collectors Guild have always been high....A lot of consignors fishing for the cashed up buyer to whom price is not an issue.

On US stuff his descriptions are often wrong, plus he charges over three times of market value. He is a total rip-off in my opinion.

Since his stuff is on consignment, he doesn't set the prices. I have had his staff tell me several times that items are "not realistically valued" by the consignor. Also, in my experience, they will pass on offers to the consignor.
