2 Uniform Removed Bevo SS Collar Tabs

These 2 tabs were brought home by my Grandfather, among lot's of things. He was a Captain in
Surgical and Field Hospitals. It was a usual thing to see German wounded come through the medical care system, including SS....and a prime place to pluck the fruits of combat souvenirs. And he was quite the "picker"!
I would have to go back and re-read his "diary" to know what information he may have recorded about his souvenirs, including these. He actually had notes on about 25% of his souvenirs. Usually consisting of Name, rank and Unit.
Notice the one tab has had the NCO Tresse torn away from it. That's from being in a hurry while removing it!!
    Regards- Frank

I'm a bit disappointed here. I know it's only been several hours since I posted these tabs, but they've had 52 views and no comments.
This is only the second time I've posted something my Grandfather brought home. Not sure why. I am proud if him, his service, his stories and his bring backs.
Perhaps the lack of comments is due to the fact that we see these items so frequently and its the "same old same old"?
Anyway, Enjoy them for what they are, at least.

    Regards- Frank

Hi Frank! Have a little patience, it is Tuesday and most people are scrambling this morning trying to get their butts in gear to go to work!

I love those tabs, they are great, especially with the known history. If you are able to figure out more information about these tabs (I.e., when/where they were picked up or...gasp...from whom!!), it would make them pretty special indeed! I really like the first tab which exhibits the area where the NCO tresse used to be. Are there any cutoffs in your grandfather's collection? I am a big cutoff fan, so I kind of wish your grandfather had decided to keep the whole Collar along with the tab. Very nice nevertheless, thanks for sharing!!

Would like to hear if there was a story to any of the two shown.

Several of you have asked if there were stories attached to these collar tabs.
The answer to that is Yes, for each collar tab.
My Grandfather was a captain in a Medical unit during the war. In the last weeks of the war, as well as the first weeks after the surrender, he was in the area of Hohenfels, Germany, Lintz Austria and Pilzen. He spoke fluent German, as his parents were German. While in Hohenfels, among many other prisoners, he came to know an SS soldier, who gave him a carved piece of wood, on it were a carved Totenkopf, SS Runes and a carved scene of the camp itself.
Grandfather kept a diary of his war experiences. In it, he names 2 different soldiers that he got the collar tabs from. For the one who carved the "trench art", he noted name, rank, division and unit designation.
Recently, I saw some pictures posted by another Forum member, showing an SS tunic and Cap. Also in the picture were 2 pieces of carved wood "trench art" pieces. One was carved, "Hohenfels 1945", along with SS Runes. The other piece was also carved "Hohenfels", along with a scene. Unfortunately the member had no further info on the pieces.
When I complete my research, I will post a thread. I hope you all understand the lack of detail At This Time...I dont want to "Let the cat out of the bag", until I finish researching.

Regards and thanks for your interest-- Frank

One thing I forgot to mention is that Hohenfels was the location of Oflag IIIc, which became Stalag 383 early in the war.
I have included a link to a story, as told by another soldier, that my Grandfather had told me many times as a grew up. Even after seeing the KZ camps, my Grandfather could never agree with handing the surrendering SS soldiers to the Russians. He saw first hand "Russian justice". He told me that in handing over to the Russians, any Germans who had previously surrendered to U.S. troops, we were part and party to the atrocities that would be bestowed onto them. Of this, my Grandfather was ashamed of the Allies.
