Thx NCO, group pictures like these are always eye candy aren't they ? The "thing" on Sani's thumb indeed is a protector against dirt etc., probably cut/hurt his thumb. You'll see them every now and then in pictures. There is a nice picture series of Gert Bremer in a trench shelter with such a protector ... not in camo that is.
