Threads like these bring to mind the question that I so often have perusing this forum: “Why the hell do I come here if not to ‘learn’ and how best to ”learn” then to have things explained to me?” My observation… “IMO - not original”, “I concur”, “Pile of nope” and “Not in a million years” I like the pile of nope comment, that was creative but what’ve I learned from wasting my time here? Not a damn thing.

With all due respect gentlemen, is it oh so time consuming to log some observations here that might aid in the learning process? One might ask are the pips no good and, if junk, what gives them away? Is the base material clearly (from these photos?) bad? Is the buckram of a type never seen in the construction of period tabs? Or, is everything crap due to the piping being not of the kind ‘liked’ (but sometimes seen) by the traditional SS collectors? I imagine that were observations actually noted here that they might spawn some discussion which might, in turn, benefit the collecting community such that the clueless (such as myself) might find these threads informative.

Rick I fully understand . . . But think of this
Like most here I don't normally go into detail why I think an item is wrong as you never know who's watching and making notes coz that's how it works.
If I could make a suggestion why then don't you PM those concerned and ask them why they think its wrong ?
                  Regards David

For example, compare the piping and the black material with original tabs. I dont have one to compare on my phone, but if you use the search function you will find nice original ones.

The piping on the tab looks way too thick IMO.

I am learning as well and often find the non descript comments frustrating. I have had some success talking with members privately to obtain additional information. I think it helps if they know you are serious about learning and not just expecting a handout.

For me " and take this with a grain of salt since I am new " the prongs on the pips look different than others I have looked at and the piping as well.

                          David,

I very much appreciate your response. Having been around this forum awhile I’ve certainly heard the argument before that those ‘in-the-know’ don’t want to aid those who don’t with explaining what manufacturing processes to tweak in order to make a better product but who’s to say that when I email you and the other gentlemen who comment nebulously asking for a more in-depth analysis and, as has been the case when you & I have communicated off forum before, I garner your insights, which are considerable, that I’m not a ‘sleeper’ for the Pakistanis, the Latvians or the Israelis here on the WAF?

I (or any of us) could well be the Boris Badinov, the Snidely Whiplash or the Barack Obama who’s longevity (here) and purpose is to gain your trust and eventually betray it through some nefarious, evil plan so how does responding privately to a request for detail nuances protect the hobby/community from espionage?

In the present case, tabs are not rocket science. Give me the unterlagen, the plant based mucilage to impregnate the buckram, the correct width piping, some velvet and a skilled embroiderer such as the lady over in Europe (mentioned here http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ght=diplomatic by Julian) and I can reproduce SS General’s tabs that would fool members Bob Hritz or Paul S. (Miami). Some of you might actually be able to comment ‘privately’ on circumstances where you know this has been done. That said, often (not always) the cryptic responses are due less to hard fact than gut feelings.

My point is that the ‘fakers’ already know how to produce these. What precludes them from doing so more often is more the cost involved in the proper replication and the component materials (together) required to pass the muster. Nick and Mr. Kramer point out nuances in the piping being ‘off’ and I agree but we’ve all seen viable examples of tabs made with the wrong gauge/width piping, the odd-ball tinselly piping, etc. so the judgement might, more properly be what ‘level’ of concern might there be. Were multiple issues be noted then a prudent man would walk but were the only concern be (again, for instance) piping being “off” then it could be another matter

It’s no big deal. It’s just that sometimes responses look lawyerly such that they’re open to a vast amount of interpretation where some boob like myself sort-of likes a more engineering response with highlighted data points.

Anyway, again, I appreciate everyone's clarification.

Whats interesting and the reason I posted it ,is that I took the tab to a show last week and showed several different dealers and received several different answers from its 100% correct to Im not comfortable with it. A multitude of reasons why on both sides of the coin.

The piping is not what I would expect to see on an SS tab ... maybe it is acceptable to other people ? If I were still actively collecting I would not look further than that piping as I kept on walking.
