    Hi,

is this letter dated (stamp or at the start of the actual letter) ?

It seemed that the guy was at the time of the letter part of the SS-Karstwehr-Bataillon.

    https://forum.axishistory.com//viewtopic.php?t=15831

There was in Pottenstein an SS training camp, in which the Karstwehr-Battaillon was located :

    http://www.app-in-die-geschichte.de/documents/6979

On the envelope the address reads :

3rd company of SS-K.A.A. 1 (SS-Karst-AusbildungsAbteilung 1) (an Ausbildungsabteilung is the basic battalion for each German unit in which the new soldier is trained before being dispatched to his final post in the unit).

    3rd company, 3rd section (Zug), 9th barrack

"13a" is the postal region code.

The guy was a "Funker", aka radio man. He was learning radio in the K.A.A., it is not known if he stayed at the 3rd company and if he was trained to be a radio man with portable radio, or radio man in a vehicle.

    See You

      Hi,

i forgot to mention that there is a big book on the unit, originally published in Italian, and also available in French :

      Italian (2006) :
      http://www.corbatti-nava.it/karstjaeger_it.html
Some pages of the book are included.

      French (2009) :
      https://www.amazon.fr/Karstj%C3%A4ge.../dp/2840482568

The French edition by Heimdal is the best one it seemed.

Nota : I didn't check the Michaelis (German) or the Landwehr (English) small books on the Karstjäger, but those are probably "copy and paste" content taken from the Sergio Corbatti & Marco Nava book.

By the way, the wikipedia page :

      See You

Thanks Vince for the detailed and informative reply. The date on the letter is 20.09.44 the sender is from Vienna. There were other feldpost letters to the same SS Funker, cant remember if he was also stationed in Tirol or if some of his return letters are adressed to Tirol......there were also other feldpost letters to the same man but were not titled SS.

          Hi,

          thanks for the additional info.
So at the time the battalion-sized unit was already transformed into the brigade/division, despite the location of the training battalion was still in Potenstein.

Is the "final" unit in the "Karstjäger" is listed somewhere ? As a radio man he may have been enlisted in a lot of units.

          See You

            Hi Vince,
I cant recognize any further details of this individuals career in this letter, I will obtain a few more of these letters in the near future and see if any further clues are present, it looks like the Karstjaeger have a interesting history and interaction with partisans
