sscollector what metal is this skull made of ? it does not look like cupal but only the front is silvered like on Cupal pieces (remember? we were talking about it before) Interesting IMO because I thought that skulls made of copper alloys are usualy silvered on both sides ..or is this one silver-coated on both sides too and just patined?
It's hard to say without having it in hand, but I have never encountered a Tombac Zimmermann skull. By 1941, I think Tombac was history and I think that they were all CupAl, (except for the aluminum and zinc ones).
This one appears to have aged to a dull color, but I'm sure that it is CupAl.
As for the finish, I can see the typical speckles of silver on the back side.
on the skulls that received finish on reverse just like awards received only one layer of finish wile obverse is double/thicker + lacquer protection, this is why we always see awards and skulls with allot less finish reverse than on obverse.
Often with SS skulls, you will see an aluminum edge as you pointed out on CupAl pieces. However, it is about equally as common for this to not be present. The reason that you see this feature on some pieces, is because of the sheering process exposing the inner aluminum layer around the edge. Sometimes, for whatever reason, the sheering process did not cut away the copper around the edge and so you will see little or no aluminum.
I have many pieces in my collection that are like this, (it is especially common with Deschler skulls). Anyway, sometimes we can only tell that a piece is made of CupAl, because of the color of the material and the way it ages, (which is different than Tombac). Of course, with skulls we already know that by the 41 date, that is should be CupAl.
One more thing, Deschler, (who was the first), is the only known maker that made Tombac SS skulls. These variations being, the "RZM D.&S.M. GES.GESCH.", "RZM GES.GESCH.", and "RZM 52" marked examples.
Those are Tombac.
