    Vandalized POW graveyard in Kyiv?

    Hi.

This topic is SS-related because there is at least one SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lucien Lippert) buried at the current graveyard. Thats the reason why I start this thread in this forum and I think that I will get help faster here then in other forums on WAF.

Today I went to the German cemetery at Syrets in Kyiv. Its at graveyard for about 300 German prisoners of war. When I came to the place it was something that felt a bit odd. First when I walked into the graveyard itself I saw that the big wodden cross was broken. It can of course been the wind that did this, but I have my doubts about that, and from its position it looks more like someone have broken it by force.

I have tried to find information about who to contact to get this fixed. Im not so good at finding it, perhaps someone here can help me?

    It's just unnecessary ....
There no need at all for this kind of behaviour

You can contact this organization. If you do not speak German I suspect you can write them in English-

            I agree..
if you have tools and the means to do it, fix it yourself.

No I dont have my own tools. But I would not mind to help out fixing this both by hand or with money if needed. The thing is that I dont wanna have problem with the authorities here, being some guy with tools in a graveyard if the cops show up.

Im sending a email to volksbund right now instead.

I can see your point. They may not see it the same way or even think that you used the tools to try to steal the cross!

Yes, what a nightmare that would have been, specially in this extremely corrupted country.

                  Email sent now anyway.

                    Hi,

Perhaps if you have the proper correspondance in hand and photos of the broken cross, if anyone asks what you are doing while fixing it that would be able to prove your good intentions?

I don't think it would be too big of a job.

                    Regards,
                    -Steve

I wrote this in the email I sent, that I offer to help if they need any. I will not by own initiative start doing anything, I know by now how the system here works and its as bad as people can imagine or worse.

The Friedhof seems to be taken care of by someone anyway. But it would not hurt to get this fixed as soon as possible.

The VB should know who is paid to maintain it. It may be someone or a company who takes care of many such cemeteries and does not live there. They may only visit a couple times a year etc.

I was as always in doubt whether to intervene, because the question inevitably involves, like it or not, some political judgments, not in line with the scope of this forum, but the brutality of the gesture made me angry. Here in Italy we are used to the vandalism at the hands of the social centers: a bunch of junkies & clowns, often greenhorn slakers from the upper class, subservient to the wreckage of communism, recycled as liberal leaders, and manipulated like puppets by businesses and multinational banks. Sooner or later we will settle our accounts ...

Here is a link to where its possible to see more about who is buried there, also their record of medals - which is impressive!
                              http://en.tracesofwar.com/list/15203...Kiev-Syrez.htm
Unfortunately this link shows only two names. SS-Obersturmbannführer Lucien Lippert and Richard Sborowski (unknown rank).

But while there I found a plate on the ground with a name, Gefreiter Heinrich Erich Wucherpfennig. 18.7.1921 - 22.1.1945.
