when I look into the Beaver/Shea headgear book I see all different styles of stitching stiles. For my view this or versa is legit.

That is correct, they have to match exactly. In addition, the distance between both rows of stitching does not vary.

As of course, as a professional, you will try to maintain the same distance between the rows of stitching and if you are good at it you will come up with a great result.

However, upon close examination you will find out, at least that is my experience so far, that these are not double needle made, with such well made seams the key is in the details and not in a quick glance. I am sure I have a cap with a similar quality seam that I can tell is not double needle made.

          Cheers
Well I'm sorry if the photo was worse but I'm posting from a tiny iPhone 4S at 4am at the moment. Back to sleep for me.....

The really really bad stitching (I've seen better one labor camp items) and at least a replaced eagle which does not match the wear on the rest of the cap.

Tony,I see nothing wrong here.Based on the pictures for me it's an original WSS M40 panzer sidecap.About the eagle, only with an hands-on inspection we could have an answer .
I believe the sidecap it's straight from Mike Davi's collection and it have been there since 35 years.Yes the eagle is somehow faded but you can see the sidecap have also a reddish color ,we cannot know what's happened to the sidecap since worn by the original owner .

Well to be fair the eagles and skulls often took a good beating from the tankers heads being pressed up against sighting devices in the tank. Many SS Panzer caps I've looked at have one or both worn much more than the cap itself.

Sorry about the small photo I posted - now I'm awake and on a proper computer I can see it's not much use. Looked okay on the 3 inch iPhone screen though...

Maybe someone - Fritz maybe? - can post some caps (not necessarily SS) that do have the double needle stitching?

Sorry, I can't. As I said, I can't remember I have ever seen one that I thought was made using a double needle machine.

No, only does shows as far as I know. I've held The EM side caps. 100% and nice. All of Gus's stuff is really nice. A couple of those caps were brought back by a vet in an ammo can. That's why they have rust on them. Story is that they came from the same panzer crew. $$$$ as always. He was asking $6000 for them. But, he's had them for sale for years and years. They are worth 4k IMHO. He always has killer SS stuff. See that M-43 with the buckle? Marked "Stapo" inside.

Even from that photo the cap insignia looks good.

Don't suppose you examined the officers caps by any chance?

For everyone - what's the consensus on the Winkler officers cap?
