Very nice document and photo's Luc.

I wonder, does anyone knows how Schellongs feelings were about the Flemings he commanded ?
How did he feel and think about them, did he say anything about that after (or during) the war?

        Schellong

To continue the thread, I like to add a propaganda press photo from my collection showing Schellong. Note his decorations and attempt to laugh

As to Kris, from what I recall and have learned, Schellong was quite respected as a commander. In contrary to some of the other (lower ranking) officers, such as e.g. Breymann, Kalkowski, Weingärtner, ... who were rude and didn't consider the flemish arguments as to why they entered the war as volunteers to fight the sovjets.

        Regards!

Wow Luc, what a document you've got there!
Always nice that if a topic has to do with stuff of Flandern, most Flandern people of this forum react
              Kind regards,
              Giel

Very nice photo. It also appeared in M. De Wilde's series. Yes, Konrad always had problems when he had to do something else than giving orders, place a born officer like our Konrad in front of a camera where he has to smile nicely and he wishes he was in Jampol

Weingärtner ended up as a Hauptsturmführer and, as an Austrian, was among the most respected officers of the Legion. Who do you think joined the fray on that fateful 2.3.42 and yelled, in Flemish; ,,Vlamingen voorwaarts!"? Breymann was a tiran no doubt but he was quite good at ,,das Militär''. He wore the Blutorden and ended up as a Sturmbannführer who went missing with his whole Dutch batallion at Narwa. Never heard of a Kalkowski, who is he?

                  KP-Laporte ...

Are you in any way related to the flemish volunteer Laporte ??

Then on, talking about characters and persons, you will always have two sides ... some will tell you Breymann was an actor, a rude person, others will thank God Helmut Breymann commanded them and he was a fierce Austrian officer ... some goes for "Weini", as he was nicknamed by the volunteer I talked with (will not name him here!) ... Kalkowski, or Kalzer/Kalser was a German Pole Gipsy type of guy, who served in the 2nd company and was killed when trying to flood a bunker to hastle some flemish volunteers ... it's a long story, which I heard from various volunteers ...

I also count Ritzau (Rits), Sven Martenson, Willy Kohn, Moyen and Six (the german ) among the more respected German officers ...

Then again, as said before, liking persons/people actually is somewhat a more personal issue ...

                  Kind regards
                  Geert
