Sorry. I wish I had better lighting and camera skills.

Since you guys seem to know som much about the Langemark, would you happen, under what circumstances, that Schellong was awarded the knight's cross? I'd appreciate any information that you may have. Thanks in advance.

          Nice item

Wizard, How did you get this item if J may ask. J know that Schellong lived in the states after the war, but was expatriated in 1987, as a "nazi-officer".

He led a Kampfgruppe composed out of units from the 27.SS-Div. in some succesful minor operations around Stargard. RK on 28.02.1945 as OStubaf.

No, it was his service in Dachau that got to him.

Actually J think it was as an NCO in SS-Sonderkommando Sachsen and later the SS TV Oberbayern which got him as he was serving in these units as a NCO. Maybe he was attached to KZ-Guardduty in these periods. His files doesnt describe these years very accurately.

Jens, you had asked me how I got this. I got it from a well known dealer because I wanted an earlier style ring. At that time, I was pretty happy that the ring had an unusual date and the fact that the original owner was a knight's cross winner. I was stupid enough to overlook all the other details. I should go and find out the provenance on this ring.

                    Thank you all.

                          Wizard,

That is one very nice item, I would even dare to say a top piece in a collection ... keeping the history of Schellong in mind off course ...

Somewhere I must have some press photos that were used to announce Schellong as the new commander of the Flemish Volunteers, if you like, I'll post it over here, just give me time to find it!

I recall having read once that Schellong residented in the USA in the late 1950's and was expelled from the country following his history as a Waffen-SS commander ... have to look that up again too!

                          Kind regards
                          Geert

                            Geert,
That would be great. I would appreciate whatever pictures you can provide for my files, with your permission, of course.

I have to admit that I am impressed that some of you are familiar with Schellong. When I bought the ring, I have no idea who he was.

                              Hi Wizard..

Here are some pictures from Schellong and also a document he has send to a widow of a Flemish vet KIA.
We hope that the ring will come back to Flanders... one day...

August 1944, here he is in Langemarck, a little village in Belgium where German soldiers from the first war are burried. That is the reason that Himmler changed in 1943 the name the Legion Flandern into Langemarck.
Against the wall there are other famous Flemish officers..
