          John,

After seeing the torn sweatband, I think I'd be moving it on about now. Ha ha...congrats again!

Are these threads matching? Is the entire lining sewn with this thread or is it just a repair in the front?

I can tell right now just by looking those threads are different, width and shade of color.

Whether it is "Luftwaffen SS" or not, this is an awesome cap, a lot of characters! Congrats John!

                    Eagle

Can anyone Tell me if this is a Luft para smock eagle or tunic eagle ? Also why would a generals visor not have a metal insignia or bullion ? I am leaning towards the vet putting it on .

Standard Luftwaffe breast eagle on blue/gray backed wool... Unfortunately not an exotic smock eagle.
To finish this General's cap it will need a matching set of metal SS insignia of the highest quality!

John, this is a standard Enlisted Man's wool tunic eagle. There is a close to zero chance that it was on the cap prior to 1945. It will look awesome with the eagle you have shown. Because the original holes exist in the lining for the skull and the eagle, you should ensure that the replacements also pass through these holes...

I'm referring to the thread question, don't forget in photographs, things closer to the lens appear larger. The eagle thread may actually be smaller anyway since it was most likely post war added to fill the space.

John, email SayleF if there is a clear imprint of the skull, he can usually tell you the maker by the outline. Then match the eagle to it if you want.

Restoring it is easy, Leaving it as "Vet aquired" is the rub.
The way this cap was found is integral to it's provenance.
Any way you look at it, "It's only a Waffen SS general's visor"

Just rip that abomination off.... Even if a dumb vet stitched it on!
