"Provenance" - a question: Does "provenance" stop after the vet essentially testifies to the ownership and condition of the item he hands off to another? I believe "provenance" is much like chain-of-custody documents as it applies to 'evidence' in a trial, thus the current owner's statements regarding the cap are just as valid as the vet's. Therefore there would be no degradation of the cap or chain-of-custody documentation were the cap's proper insignia restored and a photographic record maintained.

I recall a Luftwaffe officer's cap I got from the family of the deceased vet (http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ight=luftwaffe). It had an enlisted wreath and an authentic Assmann SS eagle on it. I did the best I could to restore the cap to it's proper configuration and it's now consigned over at Mike Holverson's 'Marshall's Baton' store. Was I wrong in restoring the cap?

I believe the cap should be restored to it's proper config. Great score by the way!

        ss

Thanks guys , I honestly think that if it were a true luftwaffen visor the set up would be much better , at least a metal or bullion luft eagle and not put on top of where an ss eagle was applied , so my dilema is weather or not to take the luft eagle off and restore it to its proper configuration . Any comment on this are welcome .I am seriously considering putting the proper insignia back on as i do have the deschler eagle to match the skull . As for provenance , this thread can be printed out as can the other that Robert .E started on the estate auction /sale ,that can help to prove the original source .

Come on, guys. Some of you are making WAY too much out of this. This cap was almost certainly never worn this way during the TR.

When these souvenirs were brought back from the war, they were essentially worthless. Other than those kept as keepsakes by the vets themselves, most were used by kids playing war around the neighborhood and many were destroyed in the process. The insignia were often broken, swapped, or lost. Some kid may have liked this cloth eagle better and asked his mom to sew it on. Maybe, long after the insignia were lost, someone in the vet's family tried to "put it back together" with the odd piece of insignia that looked like it belonged there after seeing Colonel Klink on an episode of Hogan's Heroes. Who knows and who cares? The bottom line is that this eagle does not belong on this cap.

Rather than preserving what is likely the "history" of how kids played with then-worthless war souvenirs in the late-40s and 50s, restore this item to the way it originally looked and preserve a more meaningful period in its history.

I think the approach recommended by Rick would be correct 99% of the time. I think it would only be correct to restore it to SS configuration, since no other even makes sense.

The only "error" I know of, testified to by several old collectors, is where an Allgemeine white piped SS black E.M. cap was found with Luftwaffe officers bullion insignia, buttons, and officer's chin cord. The hat was corrected by the collectors to an SS E.M. and sold in it's "original" proper configuration.

That was before much was known about the HG panzer formations and what they wore.

                                John,

It just says German military hat...you could up it to one of Hitler's visors, and it would still be O.K. Why settle for a measly SS generals visor? You can also add all sorts of cool stuff and have the official paperwork.

Looks great...should not have sold that aluminum set. Typical sellers remorse, but you have the hat to console you now. Feel free to send it sunny CA for a visit.
