Thanks for posting the pics, Paul!

Notice the round cast flaw on the left shoulder close to the eagles neck.
Also, the oak leaves are quite sloppy. Best, Chris

I think I'll get the hang of this collecting thing but it may take a while. It's survivable (Ithink) but not very nice. This cap cost me dearly. The price you'll have to guess it for now. But it'll come out in the end. $3500 oops! I slipped. Left my lips almost as quickly as it left my wallet. Should have done a bit more research I'm sure. But the dealer assured me it was real?

Wow, $3500 that's a great deal of cash! I have heard this sad story many times before, happend to me when I started collecting NSB (Dutch National Socialist Movement) regalia, the old dutch postal jacket is simlar and with a few alterations, well.....

Research is the key and even then.... sometimes you still get a fake, the dodgy dealers are good at ripping collectors off, so word of mouth is also a good tool.

Sorry to hear you were ripped off, most of us here will know what you are feeling.

        Cap

The smell of an original cap should be MUSTY, not like vomit. If it's a fake cap, someone probably saw it and immediately puked.

          Cap

The little bow doesn't look right on this style cap. And, has anyone seen this style of sweatband on an original cap? I haven't, but it may exist. I HAVE seen it on other fakes, though. I noticed that the chinstrap strips appear to have been glued together on both sides of the center keeper (Right beneath the skull). I don't believe this is correct, if they are. How would you use or adjust the chinstrap? Period photos DO show the chinstrap in use. I've never seen 2 different wool materials used in the same cap, but it is possible they were using up material from the earlier non-ribbed caps.
If a cap is shown on this forum, and the vast majority don't agree on it's authenticity, that's definitely NOT GOOD. Look at the posts where most aggree a particular cap is original. The thread is relative short, with most everyone saying, "Nice original", No doubt on this one!!", etc., etc. That's because the SS RZM enlisted rank caps are pretty standardized. You may see manufacturer's variations, but there's generally STILL little or no doubt from all the talking heads. The MUSTY smell is a very good sign, but still not a guarantee, as some fakers put the cap in a trunk in a damp basement. Just too much money involved to have so many doubts.

This is a well done fake visor, but just that- fake. If you had an original in your hand, and this one together, you would readily see the differences in aging and materials. I hope your dealer makes things right as this is a big mistake on his part and I don't think your better militaria dealers would have let this one slip through the cracks.

I have to agree 90% of the orig hats are a small size from 54 to about 57.I had 2 that I sold too Gerorge Peterson a long time ago and 0ne was a size 56 the other was a 55.When I started collecting helmets and hats I collected only large sizes 59 and up and it took me a long long time to get helmets or hats in that size range. Now a day's these sizes are very very rare and sell for lots of $$$$$$$$$$.

            Enjoy your hobby

Did this collector ever get a refund on the bogus cap?
