Interesting photo. The question is, did they start life with or without the piping? Perhaps there is no way to say for sure.

Famous photo of UStuf Hans Becker (later KC in 1943) leading
his platoon of 17./LSSAH at the 1940 victory parade in Berlin.

I would not exclude though, that these straps were given out
      for parade purposes.

LAH had artillery attached to them in support in France, three batteries but they were as far as I know part of the SS-VT Artillery Rgt. and not directly part of LAH. The actual first LAH Artillery unit was formed initially as a brigade in July of 1940 and was quickly expanded to a full Artillery Rgt. in August 1940.

There's a photo of Rottenfuehrer Erich Sommer on page 100
in Thomas Fischer's book 'Soldiers of the Leibstandarte' which
in my opinion shows pointed and piped straps worn around mid
war on a full combat tunic.

              Robert,
IMO your LAH straps are 100% original and sure started theyr life piped in red.
I think esamimning also mine, that arent too much early, probable 1940/41, and made just for the LAH artilley Rgt. how we know the LAH was the only SS unit authorized to use the monograms on theyr straps for all the war.
Differently the Totenkopfverbande numbered pointed straps are prewar manifactured, abolished very early on the TV uniforms, they have different characteristics, like the difference that can be between a prewar LAH straps, piped or not, and the pair examinated in the start of this thread, that are sure wartime IMO.
Here a pair of pictures of mine.

                I have a simple question.
Why there is so much difference in terms of quality between the LSSAH cyphers embroidered on the loops and the ones embroidered straight on the shoulderboards ?
                Maybe they were privatly made?

Lorenz, thanks for taking the time to post your boards. They look like they are the same type as mine, and I agree the lineage on the SS artillery goes back to a period in the war when pointy boards could certainly have been built and worn.

Where did yours come from? Any story behind them? Mine came from a veteran grouping that has had nothing but original items in it.

                  regards, Robert

                    Simple ,
becouse like all other things there are some differences between the years of construction and manifacture, if you check on Bender book about the Leibstandarte AH pag 270/271 you can see some different types of embroider and also the LAH piped boards in white.
                    Interesting book
The LAH cyper embroidered on loops are the last manifactured, so nothing starnge if existing differences compared with a early ones.

I disagree,I should expect more quality on the early/pre-war items and not viceversa.I don't like the embroidery on the shoulder straps that started this thread, this why I 've asked if there a chance they were privatly made

I know why you asked, and I'm also disagree with you, they are simple light different, for you are in better quality the one imbroidered on loops, for me on boards, just matter of taste.

I would love to Have Robert's pair in my collection of LAH boards.l I believe Lorenz's boards are much the same and I imagine the tunic is spectacular.

Good or Bad, we shall probably never really know....

They feel good, yet the embroidery looks weak and not as sharp as I would expect from a pre-/early war piece. Difficult.

The cypher is fairly worn so its hard to assess exactly how precise it was when new...

Another question: Shouldn't the cypher be in the same Waffenfarbe,
in this case 'red'? From photos we know these existed.
