I think the impracticalities for the use of such metal insignia by combat troops of the WSS may be the reason they are not commonly seen. However, for rear echelon security troops may be these impracticalities were not so much of an issue.
Let's not forget that SiPo personnel were not permanently out in the field like the combat troops of the WSS and if these caps were private purchase items, as has been suggested elsewhere, it would be much easier, quicker and cheaper for an individual to simply remove the metal insignia from the usually worn schirmmütze, and place on the M43 when out in the field. JMO.
I am not saying that there isn't any order stating that metal insignia only is to be worn on these caps, but I just think that the small number of these caps we are probably looking at does not really warrant such an order....or does it? Who knows?
