    Hi T,

I think the impracticalities for the use of such metal insignia by combat troops of the WSS may be the reason they are not commonly seen. However, for rear echelon security troops may be these impracticalities were not so much of an issue.

Let's not forget that SiPo personnel were not permanently out in the field like the combat troops of the WSS and if these caps were private purchase items, as has been suggested elsewhere, it would be much easier, quicker and cheaper for an individual to simply remove the metal insignia from the usually worn schirmmütze, and place on the M43 when out in the field. JMO.

I am not saying that there isn't any order stating that metal insignia only is to be worn on these caps, but I just think that the small number of these caps we are probably looking at does not really warrant such an order....or does it? Who knows?

You may be right, but I did notice that while the use of solid schirm insignas on M43 by WSS troops is something pretty uncommon, it's pretty common amongst SiPo\Stapo\SD\EG combat soldiers, so, there must be a reason for.
Something similar to the link to those strange "belted" M43, very rarely encountered in wear by WSS troops, but very commonly by SiPo\SD\Stapo\EG.
Looks to me that there must be a connection between the use of such "belted" M43 caps with solid insignas and "Security" units such as of SD, Stapo, SiPo etc.etc.

I think this may be the case.
Interesting nonetheless, I love such pictures with solid insignas.
      Nice thread.

            Some more!
First example: buckled cap in Waffen SS service (Estonian Leigion Der Spiess)
2nd example: buckled cap worn by SD member (again in the Baltics)

Awesome images. The SD NCO's shoulderstraps are interesting with the extra tresse material in the center!
BTW I love your Estonian images on Facebook Worm.
Amazing collection. So much Estonian photo material survived.
They were obviously proud of their soldiers defending the Baltics. (to include images of local SD members even )
As we know Baltic Waffen SS members were allowed to immigrate to the West and were not classified as war criminals (per the Nurnberg trials)
Perhaps that is why so many period images of the Baltic Waffen SS members survived...especially portraits...not destroyed!

Collecting of those pictures have been very hard work! If you had those kinde of pics in your hands touring the russian occupation then you had also a ticket to the prison camps, so most of them was burnd or hidden! The pics you can see in facebook "otofoto" is almost of 10 years 24/7 result of my work.

a few more estonian sd soldiers ..

                          Because it's overpriced IMO.

Worm, superb photos. Many thanks for posting.

                            Forgot I had this.

Here is a pic of Dr.jur. Otto Wächter wearing what appears to be this type of cap.

                                Thanks T.

Photos of this cap in wear are pretty hard to find and none more so than to officers.

However, they are apparently not as hard to find as the card that started the thread?
