Does anyone know why some Totenkopf Division collar's had the Totenkopf on both side's of the collar and some had it on only the right side with the rank insiginia on the left side?

    TK Tabs......

Very interesrting ...... I have never though about that one before, but some officers did actually wear the runic collar patches as a mirrored image. David

The mirror totenkopf were authorized for a short time in 1940 I think but some TK members were still wearing them at Kursk in July 1943. These are very rare tabs.

        Very briefly:-......

With the expansion of the Waffen-SS in 1939-40, it was decided to do away with their collar rank patches which confused Wehrmacht troops - they didn't know who to take orders from, who to salute, etc. etc. when mixed in with SS NCOs and officers. Rank was to be shown only by shoulder boards in the usual Wehrmacht style, with both collar patches (runes and TKs) showing mirror images.
In 1940, however, this order was rescinded as SS smocks were covering the shoulder boards and rank could not be ascertained from the boards alone. So they went back to the rank patches.

Mirror patches continued to be worn unofficially from mid-1940 until the end of the war by some TK vets.

          Mirror patches ......

But why, only the TK's and Runic's mirrored ..... ??? When there must be at least a dozen or more symbolic patches available.... ??? David

            David.

Only the runic and TK patches were in use when this order was in vogue.

The other symbolic patches didn't appear until later.
