Thanks for the opinions Guys, much appreciated. The trap is indeed thread and not wire but thanks for having a look Ian.
Does anyoe have a set of boards with this type of cypher to post to compare? They look to be made of aluminium and are actually well detailed- there is some wear to the high areas and the later paint obscures the detail a bit, they seem to have been on the boards for serious time.

      LAH Cyphers

The cyphers are probably real. They were probably taken off allgemeine boards, painted gold by the owner and sewn to the waffen boards. They look to be aluminum which is correct. The underside may show a copper surface. I would try to take a peek.

Thanks Peter, I have tried to take a look but they are settled tight into the boards, from what little I can see they appear to be all aluminium. Has anyone got photos of a set like this in their files they could post at all?

        Many thanks

        Patrick

I agree... Appears to be early "large curly" LSAH cyphers which have been period recycled for use on war time combat shoulder straps!

Thanks Nick! looking at them closely they have been painted gold and then sewn tightly to the boards, they have incurred some wear and had some gold paint touching up in areas which covers some of the sewing thread but not a drop on the boards. There is then further wear which shows the base metal to the highpoints.
The impression and traces of finish from the shoulder buttons is clearly visible- they have been pulled off a uniform with some force which has ripped through the button holes on the bottom straps. If these could talk they could tell a tale for sure
