There is one sign here that it could be the same cap but better images are needed.

Did you have a look under the black band? Also, any card or buckram band inside the cap?

Not yet - the items are still in quarantane. Will do so after the weekend, and post better fotos in a new thread about the cap.

What a phenomenal find! This is what collecting is all about IMO. Both of these ultra-rare items speak for themselves, and yet you have not only bullet-proof photo evidence of the pieces in wear together, but also anecdotal provenance from the vet's family. It doesn't get any better than that. Everything is PERFEKT!

Correct me if I'm wrong folks. IMO that is what I've always called an M-37, although I believe they came out in 1936 sometime. It was basically a feldgrau replacement for the black uniform and was unique to the SS-VT and EG at this time. No Heer units ever saw these. It was originally worn with an open felgrau collar. This one had the top button and dark green collar added later, a common practice. This one also appears to be of a better grade of wool than normally seen.

The crusher is stupendous! My guess is that it was damaged and repaired in the field . Apparently there wasn't a long enough piece of black cloth available to go all the way around, so it was done in two pieces! I don't recall seeing that done before. Too cool. Also the leder sweatband has been repaired with a section of another one that doesn't quite match, but close enough! The man must have loved this cap to continue wearing it through all of this.

Both items have modifications but are still absolute one-lookers, and are CLEARLY the same as those in the wartime photos. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Hope that one day the group will be together again.

should the tunic the same one as shown in the last period photos?
