Thanks Luca, to me it looks like heavy nicotine staining and period wear. I have a tunic like that which belonged to a collector that was a heavy smoker and had the jacket on display in his house. After he died of lung cancer I bought it.

Now that I can see the 2 covered areas (the French cuff & eagle) in the same shot, I can see that the discoloration is similar. Why is this uniform so faded? It seems to have spent a lot of time in bad lighting or air. And some sort of eagle (original or replacement) was on it for a long time.
Most of the time we are looking for shadows of old insignia. These certainly stand out.
And again, I am not even speculating that this tunic is not original. Just trying to learn.Comment

It is really a shame to see great pieces of history treated like this. This is why they don't allow smoking in museums or have fluorescent lighting or allow flash photography.Comment

I never said it wasnt an original tunic..I said I did not find any evidence indicating it was a Waffen SS tunic its entire life...now when I looked at it and had it for a couple days...It had very loosely stitched on collar tabs and the boards were slipped on through a string rather than sewn on. It did smell of smoke and appeared t have been worn at some time in its life..but in 65 years anyone couldve worn it and sweated in it. It had a different eagle as well.
I bought a tunic that had fresh sweat stains and some idiot wore it with bare uder arms cause he left traces if hair as well...stupid to wear historical antiquities and ruin them.Comment

Material Damage
My thoughts as I just lost a friend of three plus decades, who literally smoked himself to death. His whole house was a dark shade of brown, due to the constant smoke.
This tunic I believe belonged to a heavy smoker , plus perhaps some direct light damage. I have an officer's overseas cap that appears to be brown, then when the skirt is pulled down it's actually grey.Comment
