I have seen this sort of thing on Crucifixes before...perhaps this is for a wall-hanging variety...

That is a very nice & classic example. Looks like some type of funerary ornament.
The crucifix idea is good too, especially Catholic, as many Germans were.
If G.I.'s were looking for war souvenirs, probably any skull would be good game, especially with the notorious TK reputation. I guess in time of war, any removable skull would be taken, providing there was the opportunity.
I hope some one can come up with a period pic of one. Good luck.
