A Visit to Sachsenhausen

In 1956, the East German government established the site as a national memorial, which was inaugurated on 23 April 1961. The plans involved the removal of most of the original buildings and the construction of an obelisk, statue and meeting area reflecting the outlook of the then government. The role of political resistance was emphasised over that of other groups. (Wikipedia)

Great pics. Thanks for posting.
I see they have some SS artifacts on show in the museum, unlike Auschwitz were there are no artifacts from the KZ staff apart from copies of documents. There are no uniforms, insignia, ID documents or anything.
Even the buildings associated with them are almost unknown or prohibited from entry. At Ausch. I, the Commandants house is a private home. The SS accomodation, private flats and the SS Hospital is now an office block used by museum staff.
At Ausch.II, the Commandants office building is a church, the SS guard hut is empty and locked and the Doctors room in the bath house is used by the security guards. Also, the large barracks complex and parade ground for the SS detachment is completley gone.
