With that chest patch I'd suppose he was on the German Olympic team.

Sad that war then as today has to take people away from life in such short years.

This days of the week that started 4 june to 7 june are the anniversary week of Midway & Normandy. The toll in these actions are staggering and one wonders how society endured the loss.

So much sorrow and grief accompanies all of this

No, I don't think so... Agreed that the patch is very likely for wear on sports clothing during winter sports competitions, or perhaps just one specific sports event where this man's team participated.
However, his cap EdelweiƟ identifies him as a mountain trooper and the patch says "SS GebJg" (= GebirgsjƤger) too. However, the SS did not yet have any mountain troops when the 1936 Olympics took place.

That would make more sense to me too.

Looks like there was more wording running along the bottom- first letter "H"? . That must have been a beautiful patch, looks all hand embroidered.

Guys, would you imagine is somebody would have posted a patch like that here? It would be hard to believe that they used to wear such a loud insignia w/out a period pic...

It could have been for one of these schools, just a possibility.

Well, there was a Waffen-SS mountain troops' school at Hallein.

That is one I have never seen! I wonder if was done by somebody with the help of a sewing machine? Really great piece of insignia. It looks too prominent to have been worn in the field so I agree some sort of school or "team" insignia.
