Which is what I thought .... as we know most SS tunics were (at least) de-nazified, if not stripped completely. The tabs and straps would tell us a lot, trouble is of course that the owner instantly goes on the defensive when anything is questioned ...

The cap saga on Headgear brings much he say's into question though

Sorry Bob - I'm with Mike D. on this one... I just glanced through Agte's biography of Peiper looking for frontline non-portrait shots and the majority of clear photos show cyphers on the boards. Not definitive but indicative...

About ten years ago, I talked to the last commander of LAH, weather the order of removal of CT w´here carried out. His response was that it wasnt.

Simply because there was no need. They where already remowed due to securty reasons.

Although at that time, he was at an advenced age, he was very clear about this issue.

I also had the oppurnity to "kill" the fact about a danish Ostbf in the 7 SS.

        regards

Ive studied lots of books including Agtes...I still dont think missing cyphers is a disqualifier. But as we know lots of LAH tunics turned up post war not all of them were LAH during the war. This tunic IMHO could have been made late war or retailored late war and had a name tag added no one can say for sure. It is IMO a period tunic and maybe he found it with just the collartabs sewn on and restored the rest...what bothers me is snide rude replies and insults to his tunic when in fact he didnt ask for that. There are alot of different ways to critique something.
Who knows maybe this guy is a regular at SS reunions and built up a collection from that...fake or real he deserves to be treated better.

Steve Wolfe has a Deutschland Officers with the cufftile sewn above the cuff just for info and there is a period photo of an LAH officer with the same.

I also agree with John. Both in this thread and the separate thread on a cap that supposedly belonged to Phleps, this fellow has been unmercifully jumped on, made fun of, called a liar, etc., etc. This seems to be almost routine conduct here and it's getting pretty sad.

Constructively criticize all you want, but this other stuff forces people away. Although SS material seems to elicit fierce (and sometimes snide) comment routinely, this is spreading across this Forum. Who in his right mind would want to subject themselves to this? Maybe this is why many of the best voices here have disappeared.

You guys are missing the big picture. He has had an interesting “I bought it from the vet, vets son, father-in-law” for everything he posted. In the case of visors it looks pretty cut and dry that the stories have holes in them. This tunic is obviously not a one looker so why should it be any different? Was this just a look-see post or was it being vetted for sale?

I would't comment the tunic on this thread.Surely I would prefer see better and close up pics before to judge, but c'mon guys, there are plenty period pictures that shown Officers and Man without the LAH cyphers on the boards.Of course, they are a minority but is not a so uncommon pratice.

I agree that his stories DO appear to have holes in them, but, on the other hand, if a person is "hanging himself" when discrepancies are pointed out, do we really need to bring out the butcher knives when a scapel would work just as well?

Don't get me wrong, I've handed out (and had handed to me) my share of harsh remarks. It just seems that the "dogs get turned loose" with greater frequency now than before, to the point where the item gets lost in the personality clashes.
