A skull pattern that was very popular on Leibhusaren caps and SS caps, too.

Thanks a lot guys. Very instructive replies.
Anyway: the general assumption is that all "early" skulls worn by Allgemeine were not officially given to SS troops, quite reissues taken from Imperial troops and early '20s Freikorps or Wehrwolf.
But at the same time even Freikorps and Wehrwolf I think didnt have "official" skulls.
So, my question is: Did those troops (Freikorps etc) wear earlier-imperial skulls or were these skulls manufactured specifically for them?

Because skulls were very popular, many makers started to make new skull variants in the 20's. Such skulls you can find on Wehrwolf and early SS headgear for example.

Hi Stefan,
About 3 or 4 years ago I came across a picture online of 5 or 6 SS men posing and they were all wearing kepis. In the back row one had a Brunswick skull with the leather chinstrap covering the bottom parts of the crossed bones. It was really distinct.
I saved the picture but it was lost in a computer crash. I lost a hell of a data base in that crash.

The classic " Prussian " , or " Danziger " skull by Steinhauer & Luck is the ONLY jawless skull made with an RZM marking , and so an officially sanctioned & distributed SS jawless skull .
It is the one found in the vast majority of period pictures , but of course ALL other types no doubt have found their way on caps , especially during wartime ,
including old stock hussars , commercial ones , small WH Panzer , etc. etc. etc.
Only haven't seen the Brunswick one yet on SS headgear , so too bad that picture has disappeared ..
