Hi Tom,
I agree with you Tom, I think the black background started with the Allgemeine SS. Perhaps a lot these were moved over to the green outfits. Eventually green backed versions appeared for official use on the green colored uniforms.

I must agree with Tom and Pete. I have seen both black backed and green backed Old Fighter's Chevrons on original Waffen-SS tunics.
