Early SS Skull + eagle, do they have a chance ?

    Hi all,

a friend of me just visited me with this pair of SS insignia. He wanted to hear what I think about them. Well, I have strong doubts about the originality of them, but I dont want to tell him something wrong.

So I wanted to ask the experts on these.

What is your opinion about this set ?

    Many thanks, Jens

look at the head area and the right feed, looks like the metal was stamped crooked.

The skull's original, but it isn't SS. It's army cavalry. The form is very distinctive.

...and the eagle is most certainly not.

                  Thanks Robert and Brad

So I will pass on the eagle and take only the skull.

They are supposed to be found together and the guy who has them is not a military buff at all. He said he got them from one household.

So is the eagle bad for sure ? I dont want to make a mistake and breack up a grouping.

                  Many thanks,

                  Jens

Unless it is some never-before-seen super rare early/prototype second pattern eagle, I would say it is safe to conclude that it is a fake.

Also, considering the skull is a first pattern skull, which was replaced by the second pattern skull starting in 1934, and the eagle is a second pattern eagle, which was introduced in 1936, finding the two together on the same cap would be very unusual.

Ok Brad, thanks for your help. I think I will only take the skull now.

                      Thanks for taking the time.

Here are some of these skulls as they were dug up a few years ago by workmen in Germany......

The one you show has been cleaned. Here is one before cleaning. It looks like zinc but it is actually silvered brass.
