    Camo smock

I have a chance to buy this smock which has been out of cirulation since the 80s. Is this the "pink" smock? I would appreciate opinions to see if this is a pre45 item.

Yes, this is the "pink smoke". Many threads have been written on this. Personally and many, many other collectors believe that is a post war production.

As mentioned above there is virtually a small book worth of posts contributed on these smocks scattered over several threads in this forum.

I am of the camp that believe that these may be original.

They have almost every small tell-tale detail correct, but do not really even try to reproduce the exact color scheme or pattern of the accepted originals. I feel that characteristic is very strange for a late 70s vintage repro. That obversation is not the real basis for my opinion on these, but does seem to sum up the obvious.

Even though called "pink" smocks, they actually contain no real pink color in them (unlike many accepted originals!) the base colors are more rust and purple.

This one that you posted is interesting in that it shows the patch repair to one of the pockets where the CZ film studio property stampings was cut out adjunct to being sold in "West Germany". Most of these smocks (not all) have large holes/repairs to one of the pocket bags, inked out stampings or intact stampings of CZ(?) property designation. I find this strange for reproduction items of the early 80s (10 years before the rest of the big cache of authentic SS material was "discovered" and such marking became an assest rather liability to such items.

When these first turned up several big dealers declared them fake due mostly to these stamps (and the fact that they did not find them first, I believe!) and said that these were film props. They could be repro, but no way do I accept them as film props.

Lastly I will say that many if not most of us who were there when these first showed up in the FRG tend to be convinced of there originality based in a large part by the condition and state of the ENTIRE lot. Others posts will address more that I care to right now.

                            my humble opinion

Good discussion "phild." I've owned many real smocks and the construction looks "spot on" however, the problem exists in the odd color variation and the collector opinion whichs adds to the problem. Yes, late war material, camo pattern looks right on...color is odd. Being able to retain value...?
                            Best,

If I may,I'll post some great pics of some of my camo which you may study. I -for one- believe textbook (above) examples may be the way to proceed here...
