Sorry for my crude marks but here is what I see on the collar

I like the runes tab and the armshield; the eagle is a bit too blurry but could be OK; the edelweiss is the army pattern. I'm don't know about tunics, but it looks very 'fresh' and crisp to me, and I'm surprised the buttons don't show more wear. I'm surprised that all of the insignia (apart from the shoulder boards) is 'enlisted' rather than officer, though that wasn't unknown. Overall, I would be 99% sure it has been put together from relatively cheap original insignia with a possibly original tunic.

The boards look to have been re-sewn, and the tabs seem sloppily applied to me. I also don't like the award loops or the color of the collar, which could just be the lighting I guess. Stamps, etc. look like a lame attempt to get as much "Nazi" stuff on it as possible. Enough weirdness for me to avoid. The tunic itself may be an original, but I would bet that all the insignia has been applied post-war.

I agree with the consensus as stated: It's a put together tunic. The collar tabs have not been sewn on at the correct angle and are sloppily done; shoulder boards replaced and not put on correctly either; mismatch in wear among the insignia; bogus stampings and I don't like the badge loops either.

A one looker fantasy tunic slapped together from parts.

I agree, the tunic looks, at least from these images, original but all of the stampings are done inappropriately with fake rubber stamps, and the insignia certainly does not look as though it has been on the tunic for more than a few years--certainly not since pre-45. The tabs should have piping as well for an officer.

Thanks for all the help . I don't think my friend will will be too shocked. What would be the best advice for this one, dismantle it and sell the bits?

The lack of piping around the collar doesn't bother me much. There are a lot of photos of officers wearing collar tabs without piping. If this were a nice tailor-made tunic though, you'd expect the collar tabs to be piped, but there again, it's what the tailor could get his hands on at the time.

By putting those fake ink stamps on it, the possibility of doing a much better job of putting a decent tunic together has been thwarted. Too bad...

I agree with all of the above remarks. An original tunic with SS insignia applied post war with bogus ink stamps added as are the award loops.

                    A one look put-together..

I guess one could remove the insignia and part it out, but there's no guarantee that what's on there is legit. Does anyone else not like the color of the collar?

The collar is fine there were different shades of green used.

                            In my opinion:

                            1. The tunic is more than likely Wehrmacht not W-SS
                            2. The insignia are reproductions, except the shoulderboards
                            3. Stamping inside breast pocket flaps does not appear to be original
