i always try to keep a cool head when i see fake/fantasy items on eBay, and i take the postulate that the seller is not knowing what's going on...
But here, i have my doubts.
Here is the original text of seller "cantho1965" of the ad on eBay :
Valise en carton époque ww2, insigne des volontaires Français peint dessus, morceau de bande de bras collé sur la valise, étiquette intérieur présente. Pas de belle histoire à raconter, acheté dans une brocante du département de l'Orne pour son originalité. J'ignore l'authenticité de cette valise, enchérissez en connaisseur. Montrée à des collectionneurs qui ne peuvent pas préciser des choses, d'un collectionneur à l'autre c'est différent.
Dimension : 38 cm / 21,5 cm / 9 cm. Pièce de terrain mais pas percée.
Paiement par chèque.
1) "WW2 period suitcase" : there is no proof that this suitcase is not from the post-war years.
2) "French volunteers insignia painted on it" : this "Charlemagne" insignia is post-war and as far i know never existed in any period source.
3) "part of cufftitle glued on the suitcase" : this "cufftitle" is a... bookmark, which was given as free gift for the release of the Gilbert Gilles 1989 books "Un Waffen-SS français raconte..." volumes 1 and 2. See in the next post.
4) "sticker present inside" : this is a very common LVF propaganda sticker, available for a few euros on eBay and elsewhere (2 models exist).
5) "i don't know if this item is original, buy at your own risk" : no more comment is necessary.
6) "I showed it to various collectors, and they were unable to confirm anything, from one to another the reply was different" : i contacted him a after the item was put on eBay. I told him that - to avoid him any problem with a potential buyer - i was 100% sure that the suitcase was bogus. I then provided him with all the basic infos i presented here ("Charlemagne" insignia is post-war, "cufftitle" is a 1989 promotional bookmark.).
The guy thanked me, and didn't modify his ad.
7) "payment by check" : any eBay/PayPal user will understand what it's imply.
Now anyone can make his own conclusions.
To me the value of this suitcase is at best :
- suitcase : 5 euros
- bookmark "Charlemagne" : 10 euros
- LVF sticker : 20 euros
