Visor caps are not my area, but just from a gut response this cap may be a reworked WWI EM/NCO artillery visor.

I agree with you judging the shape, lining and headband. This is one reason that Imperial technical service/artillery caps are so hard to find, most are now SS Artillery caps

true, but always a possibility some were period altered to WSS use but who knows?

also might be a franky from an early Heer visor

Agreed. I have a pre-WWII cap that definitely shows signs of having had a skull and eagle applied to it to create a W-SS artillery cap. This was reportedly done routinely - the question always remains "when".

            Nice looking cap.

And that would explain the clearly replaced TR period visor.

I believe you are correct, but I think some ended up being recycled and used by the SS before the war. There are several SS studio photo's floating around with branch colored piped visors that are identical caps with SS insignia.

Did these imperial caps have black bands vs. green?

                        Thanks,

To add to the conversion theory, here's another example of a likely converted Imperial cap turned SS. The bill has been replaced from the tiny WWI types to a more substantial WWII one.

The velvet band and piping made these good candidates for pre-1945 conversion, and post WWII for that matter. The shade of green wool on these is close to early WWII as well.

I have a similar version without any provision for a chin strap, mine has a great saddle shape, velvet band, but is clearly (IMO) a ww1 visor with SS insignia. I believe these ww1 caps (with the spring band removed) are the primary source for the period photo's of branch piped colored SS visor caps.
