SS M43 Cap with green embroidered insignia

    Hello Folks,
Here is the M43 I mentioned earlier with the backward buttoning flaps. It has a herringbone liner and pulldowns, and a very tightly woven green trap with almost the exact shade of green as the hat body. What do you think - is it a good one?

Hi Robert, these woven traps are very tricky customers but I believe yours is ok.
Here's an identical one for panzer.

Thanks Ben - the eagle you showed is an exact match for mine.

You're welcome Robert. As for the cap itself, it's pretty difficult to judge from these photos but I'd say it's got a good chance of being authentic. The reverse flap is unusual but not impossible by any means.

These emroidered traps are the most re-produced insignia of all cap insignia. For this reason alone I would be very careful with these when considering spending one's money on them. The examples posted by BENVK are similar, but are certainly not the same.
One of the moderators, Perry, has a vet-aquired example, with a great embroidered trap for comparison.

The cut-out on the eagle shown by BENVK - an area where the embroidery didn't take and left a gap - is evident on mine and his. I'll take some head-on shots after work under daylight. There are a number of other emroibery "flaws" that show as well. There are a lot of fakes out there of this and the bevo pattern.

The odd this for me is the shade of green - it's almost a police green, and the eagle is identical in shade but perhaps from slightly finer material. I know my midnight pictures are poor - sorry for the nasty quality. s/f Robert

I have more, but here are 4 examples that have been removed from caps. I believe the one posted on the cap is good, unlike the fakes that have been made. The fakes I have seen are really lacking in detail and the embroidery is very weak and thin, or they have the round 'monicle' eyes.

If you examine them, there are slight differences in the patterns of the chest of the eagles. This is the result of loom setting and thread tension. There are discernable pattern types, of which I show 2 but I havbe seen 4 slight variations that I believe are original.

IMO Robert's is original. The 4 Bob posted are nice originals .He is correct IMO in his oberservations. The copies I have in encountered are always poorly defined.I have a photo of one I took sometime ago I will scan and post showing a "decent" copy.Cheers Steve

Wether the trap is original or not I don't know.

I personally would not own a SS M43 with this style trap unless it was on a "Dachau" style M43.

And alot of other folks wouldn't either, I'm sure. However, defaulting to "textbook" styles would have deprived me of a great many items, most of which were collected directly from veterans.
