    Aircraft compass Fl23334 question

    Hi!

To complete my "Blindflugtaffel" from a downed Ju87, I purchased a Fl23334 compass from eBay.

The compass is in rather salty condition with the glass missing (a new one on its way), but priced accordingly. The "bezel" ring in front of the compass got fields painted red and green. The paint is worn and obviously painted many years ago, possibly done during WWII. I guess this is to indicate port and starboard but noting I have seen on airplane compasses earlier.

Do any of you have any information on this kind of markings? I have searched the internet for similar markings but without any luck.

    Regards

I can't explain the markings, but by coincidence (maybe?) aircraft wing tip lights are Red on the left, Green on the right.

I think you are right. Like on the LW instrument below left is red and right is green. I just don't understand why taking the bother painting the colors on the compass if it´s only to remind the pilot of what color indicates right/left.

Maybe, when observing other airplanes on the horizon with their "lanterns" lit, it could be easier to see if they are coming towards you ore going the opposite way?

And here is another red/green marked LW item. Recently for sale in Holland.

I guess painting the barrels of a flare gun could indicate what barrel was loaded with what color, ore has this got something to do with Port and Starboard as well?

        Anyone?
