    Generalluftzeugmeister Hat Badge

This came in today with some other items. The first one I have owned and would like your opinions on it. Also would appreciate any thoughts on value. Thanks, neat looking hat badge. Wing tip to Wing tip is 65MM. Mike

Looks good, they're for the jacket actually, no era pics of luft caps with this badge, only jackets ..

Seen them priced less or around 175/200 euro.

Thanks Jos. Nice to know it is okay. My reference book shows it in two sizes. a 35MM badge for the uniform and 65MM badge for the hat. Seems odd that a badge to be worn on a uniform would have prongs instead of a pin back device. Thanks again, Mike

          Hi Jos,

This is an interesting thread for me, as I've stumbled upon this insignia only rarely. Please see the below cap, which may be the only piece of headgear I've ever seen this insignia on. I had thrown this picture into my archives a while back, and it looks like I saved it as a Technical Officer's Visor Cap.

Is this incorrect? This isn't in my collecting focus, so I've really no idea on this. More of a curiosity than anything.

          Best,

          J-

Did anyone ever find a photo of an officer of this branch wearing a cap? I seem to recall that as being what most thought would be helpful in deciding whether this insignia was also used on the cap.

I agree... there is no documented evidence, in print or photographic, which support this emblem ever being used on headgear of any typel. I believe that these caps were not issued and were post war embelishements of LW visors.

So Paul are you saying this is a post war copy or something not used on hats since there are photos of it worn on uniforms?? Mike

Original but intended as a breast badge....as pointed out correctly by the other contributors!
These were post war pinned on caps for collectors!

Probably done so because of the pins...so it was assumed that these were intended for LW caps...
and maybe they were intended for caps initially when designed during the war ,
but never worn like that... Its a jacket badge for sure!

Correct, for now a misleading badge because of the prongs and not having this knowledge put on luft visors to earn some bucks IMO.

                      Jos.

Gentlemen - You may all be correct, but so far the only thing we have seen (and what judgment is being based on) are photos of enlisted grade personnel in this branch. I would like to see a photo of an officer, with a visor cap, to eliminate the possibility of this badge being worn as a cap device.

Here a modern reference as well as a war time publication from a period magazine covering this insignia, but unfortunately it does not state how it was worn...

but ALL period images prove its a breast badge... but true only enlisted images have surfaced so far.... Sometimes worn in conjunction with a regular LW breast eagle
                              (here denazified in image)

and look at that LW visor with officer's quality bullion cap insignia!
                              Fake??
