        I agree, don't remove. I have seen a number of Carl Halfar VKAdLW-marked visors with metal insignia, and no evidence of ever having had bullion applied. There are a lot of unissued Halfar visors around--most likely the result of a depot (or the factory itself) being raided by the allies.
        IMHO, EM/NCO insignia was placed on these caps due to a simple shortage of bullion later in the war.

                  This is really interesting because, it's indicated the officers had the choice between bullion or metal insignias since 1935.

                  After January 1943, the metal insignias replaced systematically the bullions insignias for the new schirmmutzes produced.

                    Really? I thought all kind of metals were considered kriegswichtig and replaced by other mterials as far as possible.

                    Are these insignias made of zinc?
