Artillery Shell Casing & Unique Trench Art Ashtray

Here is a rather cool piece of "trench art" in the form of an ashtray.
This item must have been put together by one of our boys - Canadian or American - using a WW2 German shell casing; a few period German coins and...a German Cross/Deutsches Kreuz (Silver Class)! (I will post pictures of the award in the appropriate forum for viewing and comments).

I know very little about ordnance and artillery shells, but the markings are clear enough for a fellow member to possibly identify, please and thank you.

    John

And the killer...a German cross on which to butt-out a cigarette or cigar!

            Hello john,

Thats a very cool piece you have there, great art work. Thanks for showing it...

It look to come from a 8,8 cm flak shell maybe....

            Where did you find it?

Thanks, guys, for your feedback....but please tell me what is a "lfh casing".

And can someone please explain what the markings mean?

                  Thanks,

                  John

@John, the case numbe ris 6342St, which means this is the base of a steel ( "st") shellcase for the 10,5 cm leichte Feldhaubitze 18.

Other markings give info about factory that made it, the LOT number, and year of manufacture.

Vielen Dank! With this information I was able to look-up the markings of this "10.5 cm leFH 18" for more details - see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10.5_cm_leFH_18

                      John

PS: Sebastien - to answer your question above, I got it from a fellow collector who got it from a veteran. J.

interesting to see the maker code "arz" as this maker code commonly being found on MG42 receivers as manufactered by them.

Thanks, Phil, and I now have found out that "ar" is the code for Mauser. Not sure about the "z".
