Today, 75 years ago, U-207 was sunk.
U 207 was a member of the "Markgraf" pack and operated on the convoy SC-42 in the Denmark Strait southeast of Island. After sinking of two ships (Stonepool and Berury), U-207 was spotted by an airplane which called for support vessesl.
HMS Leamington and HMS veteran were dispatched. They were able to detect find U-207. After 3 runs with total 21 water-bombs the destroyers lost ASDIC contact and the attack was aborted.
Only after the war by matching reports of missing U-Boats and the battle report of the destroyers, in became clear that the destroyers had sunk U-207 south-east of Angmagssalik, Greenland, in position 63.59N, 34.48W
All 41 crew-members were killed.
Here the commemorative plaque from Möltenort U-Boat Memorial which I was able to visit some weeks ago.
Also please notice that 42 crew-members of the Stonepool one of the Berury died in the ice-cold waters under the attack by U-207.
