    Kriegsmarine Eagle - advice appreciated

    Hi All,

I freely admit that I'm more than a bit of a novice when it comes to WW2 German Uniforms, my main area of interest being WW1 German.

Could anybody help me with this eagle. I'd be interested to know whether it looks original even though it seems to show a fair bit of service wear. Also, is there any way of telling when roughly it would have been manufactured?

I believe it's a non-officer's type worn by both the Kriegsmarine naval personnel and coastal artillery.

I'd really appreciate any info you can share,

    thanks,

    Simon

Not an expert but to me this birds looks like the one poted by Varsity in post # 146 and by Ron R in post #118 of the thread "KM BREAST EAGLES" pinned above in this forum; great bird reference thread! There are probably a few others too

Thanks for that, Jean Claude I'll have a look now.

Does anyone know whether there was any difference between the coastal artillery eagles and Kriegsmarine eagles on dark blue/black backgrounds? I know the field grey/green ones were specifically for Coastal Artillery.

        Hi Simon,

Unfortunately, that's a fake which seems to have been distressed a bit for "realism".

This type exists in many variations as described by Fred Green in this thread:

          Ditto.

Ditto, as Norm stated this is a Reproduction cloth Breast eagle.

Good point. That is a great pinned thread on KM eagles but it's important to note that it's simply a compendium of posted examples rather than a study on originality. Individual examples should still be posted for discussion.

I'm much obliged Gents. You caught me just in time as I was thinking about ordering this. So glad I checked on here.

My grandmother who served in the WAAF in Aden during the war brought back two KM eagles and other captured German and Italian badges. My dad still has them but hopefully they'll come to me...eventually. Fortunately there is no question about originality with them.

I don't think I'll risk buying one in the meantime as the fakes are getting too damn good.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

                Hi Simon,

Would you be able to post photos or scans of the two eagles your Dad has? It's always good to see examples with provenance for future reference.

                Best regards,
                ---Norm

                  Hi Norm,

I've no photos at present but it shouldn't be a problem to take some. I think they're in a case in the loft (hardly the best environment). I felt safe buying the fake as it was the same style as one of my grandmother's ones.

Leave it with me, and I'll try to get some shots by next week.

                  Simon
