It is an interesting difference on the same documents Maurice.

After close inspection with a magnifier i think that my example has been personally hand tinted with watercolours.

The colour does not appear to have been applied during the printing process of the documents ?

This is only explanation i have.

      Regards,Martin.

BTW,i just purchased a copy of the Tischer book. There was one copy available on Amazon here in the USA.

Thanks for the post,i did not know that this book existed.

I could move the thread but at this point, I think this is the best place for it.

          Thanks John.

I guess it could be moved to the "Photo and Paper Items" forum ?

But if no one has any objections,we could keep it here ?

Either way i am happy to just participate, especially when this thread moved to the subject of Japan and the link to the HK THOR.

Now,thanks to Maurice's posts i am getting more interested in the Blockade Breakers that operated between Germany and Japan.

          Regards,Martin.

Done by watercolours himself could be an option, but then he was a really skilfull artist. Look for example at the shadows of the letters. I am sure I could not do that.. (but that tells more about me of course..)

            Kind regards,

            Maurice

There were very talented men on most of these ships--little floating cities crossing the oceans of the world. They had to be. I think many things were personalized by them on these long cruises.

It makes sense the date would be the same of course.

That is an option to consider Maurice.

My Equator document was issued to Mtr.Gefr Walter Nehm.

Here is photo that i have of Walter Nehm.

As you can see it has been hand coloured.

After the Thor returned from it's 1st cruise on 30 April 1941,Nehm transfered to Zerstorer's in Sept 1941.I beleive he remained in this branch of the KM until the end of the war and it included service on the Zerstorer "Bruno Heinemann.

Maybe he did hand colour these items himself ??

                Just theroy of course.

                Regards,Martin.

This could be like the tv series 'connections', in which all kind of subjects are related to each other. In a small branch like the Kriegsmarine that can be often the case.
Walter could have had his dinner from one of the plates on this photo. They are found on the wreck of Bruno Heinemann, by a Belgian diver. He has an amazing collection of items from the ship. (note that there are also Reichsmarine marked plates) I have one of those plates as well, and I treasure it.

                    Kind regards,

                    Maurice

Interesting photos! Nice that you have Tischer's collection of photos!

I don't have that much Hilfskreuzer documents, but this Urkunde for the quator crossing is very attractive.

Didn't know the book you mention, for Blockade brecher I use Jochen Brennecke, Schwarze Schiffe, weite See.

                      Kind regards,

I still do remember that one.......and what a nice price it went for.

The other one is clearly watercoloured by hand and very nicely done, and know that those men did have enough time to do that.

                      Best regards

                          Hi Maurice,

the copy of Tischer's book that i ordered arrived today.

What a great book with dozens of images that cover the Thor's 2nd cruise.

Thanks for the "heads up" on this one.

As i mentioned before,i did not know that this book existed.

As a compliment to that wonderful wooden Blockade Breaker piece you posted i thought that i would show this piece that i recently received from Germany.

It is a postwar piece and was made for the 1st officer on the Thor's 1st cruise Korvettekapitan Jung.

The dedication to Jung is handwritten on the reverse.

                          A lovely piece of woodwork,IMO.

BTW,i really like that set of "porcelain" you posted above.

                          Regards,Martin.

That is really a nice piece of inlay woodwork.
