      Norm,

Not sure about the ID of the ship. Looks like both had the black rimmed tops to the stacks by the late 30s--normally the paint scheme would be the same I think. The only way to have told maybe was from the crest on the bow but that is not apparent on your photo.

Classes of the same ship are really hard to tell apart as we know.

nachtundnebel and I went through a very interesting e-mail exchange comparing our photo albums; he acquired an album from a sailor who was at the Marinenachrichtenschule in Flensburg-Muerwik at the same time as my father, and a few of the photos in it were identical copies to my Dad's, suggesting colleagues would share photos during their times together.
We have the identical photo showed earlier in this thread but his is labelled as the Schlesien whereas my father had labelled his the Schleswig-Holstein.

So the question is, which is it? Does anyone know how to distinguish between these two almost identical ships from the photo? Bear in mind this photo dates from 1937. I'd like to get this right for posterity.
I could post some blowups if necessary.
        Best regards,

        Thanks Norm, my pleasure absolutely

On the scan from my album the name of the ship can be seen on the port aft side. I've tried to find other photos where the name can be seen in order to compare but without luck so far.

Have then tried to do a visual comparison but like John says, they're are very similar. Superstructure, guns, masts, cranes etc all look the same.
