    Justin,

This is a tally scanned in two parts then put together as one. You can barely tell where I put the two ends together.

Just so everybody knows, this is not a period tally. I am just using it for an example of how to use the scanner to scan a long tally and make it into one tally. It is a period gift tally like what we have already discussed but I changed the colors among other things to show you what can be done with your photo program and a scanner.

In this case, I put it together between Graf and Spee.

Whilst discussing the Holstein Tally an interesting point is that there are two variations of the letter G in the word Schleswig with one variation being rarer than the other... This variation has a rounder tail rather than the inward compressed tail normally seen. This example of the rarer G is from my collection

There were some variations in size and style, but all Gothic, from 1931 thru 1939, with these tallies. Especially the older ships and units around in 1931-1932.

Bernd and Markus' book will go into more detail with these variations when done. Bottom line, good eyes and there are many other details different than the "g" as I am sure you have noticed.

This has turned out to be quite an interesting thread. Never saw a model like yours Justin C.
            Very interesting.
I also am grateful to see some good pics and video of the ship as well.

            Regards,
            JustinG

Here's a scan from an album I bought recently. SX is the call sign for Scheswig-Holstein and SN for Schlesien.

The upper right photo is the same as Norm posted earlier on. They look like private shots but maybe not?

This plaque, now in my collection, is the shield of the Linienschiff Schleswig-Holstein. It had to be sold in the ship canteen or/and given like a present by the captain of the ship. It´s similar, but obviously smaller than the shield put in the bow of the ship. In the reverse is wroten "Linienschiff Schleswig-Holstein Mai 1936".

I sent you a PM so we can compare the photos. Definitely the same and mine dates from 1937 with my Dad's writing on the back. Maybe from a colleague at the Marinenachrichtenschule? But your album says it's the Schlesien instead of the Schleswig-Holstein?
Those ships look exactly alike to my eye. It would be great to figure out exactly which is right...

Very interesting. You can see of course main and secondary batteries firing on the fort.

                          Hi all,

nachtundnebel and I went through a very interesting e-mail exchange comparing our photo albums; he acquired an album from a sailor who was at the Marinenachrichtenschule in Flensburg-Muerwik at the same time as my father, and a few of the photos in it were identical copies to my Dad's, suggesting colleagues would share photos during their times together.
We have the identical photo showed earlier in this thread but his is labelled as the Schlesien whereas my father had labelled his the Schleswig-Holstein.

So the question is, which is it? Does anyone know how to distinguish between these two almost identical ships from the photo? Bear in mind this photo dates from 1937. I'd like to get this right for posterity.
I could post some blowups if necessary.
                          Best regards,
                          ---Norm

                            Norm,

There are a few good pictures of both ships at www.maritimequest.com .
It might be useful to identify the ships:

Thanks a lot Doug! From these photos I'd say our photo is definitely of the Schleswig-Holstein, based on the characteristic black rims at the top of the funnels as seen in this photo of the Schlewsig-Holstein from maritimequest.com.
                              Best regards,
