If you were running a poll taken only amongst self described "helmet collectors" the poll would be very different.

That is not to be a haughty statement or derides those who are not helmet collectors.

But it is the difference between informed and uninformed opinions in an opinion poll.

If I was to be called right now by a polling group and asked who I would vote for in the next American election, and was told how great Hillary Clinton was going to be for your country by the pollsters and given facts and figures to support that, even though I had no idea of the context or even if the facts and figures were real or not, I would probably be making an uninformed decision.

That is the use and value of polls among a wide audience.

If that same poll was taken among political science students who were also died in the wool Democrats and participants in policy, you might have a different result.

The difference between informed and uninformed.

I read a thread about camo covers that for the longest time was a debate of what was real or not. As a non camo cover collector I could offer an opinion either way. Why bother, I don't know the material or subject matter like others. Left to those that did, a result was said to have been determined despite heated comments and passion displayed.

So that is my polite way of saying, the poll is useless. Not that other opinions do not matter. It is how informed those opinions are and how educated they are in the matter discussed. Anyone can have an opinion.

I hope you understand what I am trying to say here and not making personal attacks or derogatory statements of any kind.....

The mere presence of a 1946 dated Cz chinstrap on the helmet does not date these to 1946 no different than the presence of a 1943 German liner dates them to 1943.

These could have been refurbed in 1948 for Cz police, Cz border guards, a base coat before they were to be painted black for Cz fire, export to Argentina, Israel, China (they wore M35s after all) or just painted like this for storage so they wouldn't rust out for some future use nobody knows about and its lost to history now.

So the "mothballed" theory is one I present now.

These helmets were for nobody. They were made on spec for a possible export market that fell through and failing that for some future unknown civic use.

They were painted and refurbed sometime after WW2, when is not important.

When there was no export market they were simply stored and forgotten about until the early 80's when they were rediscovered and sold as postwar refurbs as they've been for decades now in Europe and the US.

There. Thats my theory. And I'm sticking to it.

Reconditioning reason: Why do they exist with that effort of rebuilding, new condition refurb if there was NO (clear) post war channel for these???
Like I wrote earlier, that's playing the stock market...speculating...tossing money at it for a future customer...what if that future customer wanted a different color?...and reconditioning to this extent just for rustproofing? an oil coating can do that too!
Every other county that sat on German helmets from supply depots just scrapped them...the steel was worth MORE money than this thorough rebuild with 1000% war time parts. That is the BIG puzzle for me! Unless there is (was) a customer!

Re chin strap: True! I thought of that also of course...the chin strap could have been date stamped in 1946 and added to the helmet years later...(like 1948) . Still strange seeing it...as usually finished goods are property stamped, NEVER components... and the helmet AND chins strap are in the same moth balled MATCHING unissued condition...
Still STICKING to my possible war time shelf survivor theory, CZ stamped months later (on some...)

Removed the Bulgarian helmet example in mustard color as trash cans are appearing again...color games! No need!

Correct me If Im wrong. I would assume(once again correct me please!?) that the people that took the poll ie The Poll Pollers were helmet collectors? Im confused. Do people look at helmet forums that don't "collect" "helmets"! How would we rate a "true" "helmet collector" number of helmets? years collecting? money spent?Books read? I have a grand idea! Lets have a POLL!
